This beautiful geometric Whitby jet and Bois Durci bracelet is quite facinating as the center bead bears the D&C patent, although it is quite worn down but still discernable if you know what it is. The two smaller versions of the center bead have no patent or indication that they were ever marked so we can only assume that they must also be Bois Durci. As can be seen in the photos, the faceting and chunky cut of the Bois Durci beads is a dead-on match to that of the chunky square Whitby jet beads that complete the rest of the bracelet. This is the mystery of the D&C Patent and the continuing curiosity to know why, if t was a material that was a virtually undiscernable copy of Whitby jet and indi that it is never mentioned anyw As for Bois Durci, what is know about it is that in 1855 French and English patents for Bois Durci were acquired for the resulting product that came from Lepage's a mixture of ground ebony wood and egg albumen or animal blood then placed in a metal form, subjected to steam heat and condensed with a hydraulic press and came out looking like a carved Whitby jet bead. In an effort to be totally forthcoming about our product information, one person contacted us stating that D&C stands for the British pair, Davenport and Cole. They also were creating thier Whitby jet imitation with the use of gutta percha and papier mache. Once again, mystery shrouds the facts. If these beads are Davenport and Cole's productions (who also were around in the 1860s) then they hit on a gold mine of similarity to Whitby jet. Strangely, their product was patented but with no name and their inventor's names are virtually lost to history.Ultimately, when one buys Victorian jewelry it has to be for the love of the item and this one comes with quite a bit of history that can only grow with time. About the bracelet itself, one of the key shaped Bois Durci beads has a repair on its back which shows in at least one of the photos. Other than that, the bracelet is in great shape. It's circumference is 8 1/8 inches and its diameter is 2 1/8 inches. Your questions are our pleasure to answer and thanks very much for looking.
