VIEWS IN PHILADELPHIA AND ITS ENVIRONS, from original Drawings taken in 1827 - 30. PHILADELPHIA. Published by C. G. Childs Engraver 80 Walnut St. RARE, original first edition of one of the finest series of engravings of urban Philadelphia. There are 25 engraved plates in addition to the engraved Title Page; plus approximately 60 pages of text (6 of which are photocopies of the original pages). The engravings include many of the prominent buildings of Philadelphia in the early 19th century ; including the Port of Philadelphia from Kensington, Christ Church, Friends Meeting House of Merion,Swedish Lutheran Church, Bank of the United States, Bank of Pennsylvania, Girard's Bank, U.S.Mint, Pennsylvania Hospital, Pennsylvania Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, Widows' and Orphans' Asylum, University of Pennsylvania, Fairmont Water Works, State House, Eastern Penitentiary, Schuykill Canel . There is a 3 page list of subscribers at the rear of the book that include many prominent colonial families. There is some waviness to the pages from being damp at one time and there is also some discoloration to the pages (plus some of the tissue guards need to be replaced). The spine is missing and some of the pages are loose; also the covers are detached, but present. Although presentable as is - all flaws can be corrected making this into a very handsome copy of an outstanding book that rarely comes up for sale ,especially with all 25 engravings. Please ask any questions that you may have prior to bidding as this is an on-going auction and this rare book is being sold as-is... and with no reserve. Thank you and .
