A really great Viking bronze pendant, i would estimate a date C10/11th. This is likely to have been a warriors pendant as Thor is the God most commonly associated with war. The bronze is in as excavated condition, it was found in the north of England, an area that was heavily populated with Viking settlements at this period in history. The size is @ 1 3/4 inches tall x 1 1/4 inces wide and it has been pierced with a square hole to enable it to hang from a cord. The reverse is blank but the front face has 3 runic letters struck quite heavily. The first rune is "TH" the second omega "O" and the last "R" , THOR if you read it as a complete word. beneath the runes is another struck motif which appears to represent Thor's hammer. If you Google image search Thor Hammer there are a number of representations, this example seems to correspond to what was a common form. There are Thor hammer shaped pendants existing that are very close to this shape. The purpose of these sort of pendants were to act as charms, this one would be for luck in wars or battle. This is a top quality piece, items with runic inscriptions on them are very scarce, you see lots of small viking relics on ebay but hardly ever do you see important pieces that are good enough for a serious collector or of museum quality.
