Beautiful Vintage Green Guilloche~Enamel Brass/ Bronze CandleSticks With Glass Shades Signed : Elegance~EVANS~within the Company Crest (In my photo they appear to be numbered: 171), however when looking at the crest, I do not see any numbers~ Made by The Evans Company or Evans Case Company, Famous for their specialized (many enameled/guilloched) Compacts, Lighters and other items from the 1920s onward... a little info (via google) here: EVANS: United States. Established as the D. Evans Case Co in North Attleboro, Mass. in the early 1920s. Manufacturing compacts as early as the 1920s. Famous for their mesh bottomed compacts and their guilloche enamel. At some point in time, they became a division of Hilsingor Corp of Plainville, Mass. Disappeared after 1965. The Evans Company (also known as The Evans Case Company and The Evans Lighter Company), located in Attleboro Massachusetts first began as handbag and accessory manufacturer in the early teens. By the early to mid 20s they began producing lighters using the lift arm system, similar to the system used by Alfred Dunhill except that the flint wheel was mounted vertically rather than horizontally. The Evans Company produced many beautiful lighters with this system incorporating enameled designed cases to house the mechanism. They made matching cigarette cases and many beautiful perfume atomizers with similar designed cases. When the Ronson system began to take on more popularity due to its ease of use, The Evans Company made their own version of the one press system called the Trig-a-lite mechanism and quickly the Ronson Company started a lawsuit against Evans for copying their system. Litigation when on for many years and finally Ronson won and Evans had to settle with Ronson. During the 1940s and 1950s, the Evans Company produced hundreds of decorative table lighters using beautiful enameled bases in various shapes, many in the shapes of fruits and used the same lighter unit in all their models. This lighter unit was easy to fit into any decorative base and was used for many years. With the advent of the butane system, Evans designed the same size unit in butane so that users could easily convert their decorative bases into butane lighters. The Evans Company produced lighters into the 1970s. These are a remarkably pretty, glossy spring green.. all enamel intact.. polished brass stems.. bronze~patina metalwork along the the top/cup, the cup edge and all around the bottom edge. They have grayish/Tan felted bottoms in great condition.. and they feel as if the bottoms are weighted. There is some wax residue inside each of the candle hole areas.. and there is one spot of discoloration on the enamel, about an 1/8 of an inch in size located near the top of one cup holder- see closeup photo please. The Glass Shades are large, clear, elegantly shaped and rather fragile.. in very good condition except for the fitter ends on each is nicked/flea bitten- one fitter more 'bitten' up than the other.. however, they both fit properly into the candle holders.
