Antique or vintage STANDARD FOLDING TYPEWRITER. Typewriter is marked on back "Patented March 8, 1904," with serial number 521. You can find a lot of information and great photos of this typewriter if you Google it. Typewriter was made by the Rose Typewriter Company started by Frank Rose. About 12,000 of these were made between 1908 and 1912. There were about 800 made in 1908, which was the first year of production. As the serial number on this machine is only 512 it must have been made in 1908. The information on the website (which is a few years old now) makes this statement: "... earliest serial number so far found is 12,172." Frank Rose died before the folding typewriter went into production, but his son took over and the company eventually became Corona, and then Smith-Corona. This typewriter is made of aluminum and weighs about 5 1/2 pounds. The carriage folds over to the front so that it takes up less space and fits in its case. Note that the "cap" key is on the left and the "fig" key is on the right. Later production machines had these keys on the same side. Typewriter measures about 7 1/4 inches front to back, 10 1/4 inches side to side to the ends of the carriage, and 5 inches high in the folded position. With the carriage up it is about 6 inches high. Machine appears to be in pretty good condition. There is a small threaded knob or screw that is is in the case that is about 3/16th inches in diameter and 1/2 inch long. It has a black finish. I can't find any place on the machine where it might go so it might not actually go with the typewriter at all. There is a ribbon in the machine. The original carrying case is the cheaper imitation leather model. (You could pay a few dollars more for real leather). The case has a leather carrying handle. The interior is worn cheesecloth. I don't know if there was another layer of fabric over this or not. See my photo with the case pictured. Outside of the case has some normal wear and soiling but no real damage. The metal parts are tarnished. The machine & its box fit nicely in a large priority mail box. $18 covers packaging, shipping, and insurance up to maximum value in the US. Accept Paypal. Note: I do not accept Buy Now offers! I let the bidders determine the price. Please take postage and shipping charges into consideration when bidding. Out of country bidders are welcome but must pay with Paypal only and agree to pay actual shipping and insurance costs computed after the sale, keeping in mind the high costs of insuring and shipping items overseas. Insurance is required. Actual purchase price will be the price claimed on the customs form. I don't know what this typewriter is worth but my reserve is only $75. Thanks and good luck.
