Antique or vintage STANDARD FOLDING TYPEWRITER. Typewriter is marked on back "Patented March 8, 1904," with serial number 521. You can find a lot of information and great photos of this typewriter if you Google it. Typewriter was made by the Rose Typewriter Company started by Frank Rose. About 12,000 of these were made between 1908 and 1912. There were about 800 made in 1908, which was the first year of production. As the serial number on this machine is only 512 it must have been made in 1908. The information on the website (which is a few years old now) makes this statement: "... earliest serial number so far found is 12,172." Frank Rose died before the folding typewriter went into production, but his son took over and the company eventually became Corona, and then Smith-Corona. This typewriter is made of aluminum and weighs about 5 1/2 pounds. The carriage folds over to the front so that it takes up less space and fits in its case. Note that the "cap" key is on the left and the "fig" key is on the right. Later production machines had these keys on the same side. Typewriter measures about 7 1/4 inches front to back, 10 1/4 inches side to side to the ends of the carriage, and 5 inches high in the folded position. With the carriage up it is about 6 inches high.
