Born in Arkansas in 1880, Gilbert M. Anderson (nee Max Aronson) found himself in New York shortly after movie production began. He appeared in The Great Train Robbery in 1903, playing three roles. He soon became co-founder of Essanay Studios and during his career starred in somew between 350 and 700 movies, depending on who you believe. After 1916, Anderson flirted with a variety of film and stage ventures, none of which were greatly successful. In 1958 he received a special Academy Award for being a pioneer in the motion picture industry. He also had a cameo appearance in The Bounty Killers in 1968. He died in 1971.
