I recently acquired these binoculars at an estate sale. The markings on them include some Japanese characters that I cannot read along with: âeoeNIKKO TOKYO No 571946âe (on one side) and âeoeOrion 6X24mm 9.3âe The 9.3 is followed by a degree mark that I do not have on my keyboard. According to some research that I have done on the net, these binoculars were first produced in 1918 and this particular pair is probably not older than 1923. I am not a binocular expert so I leave it to the buyer to determine their actual age. The condition is much like you see it in my photos. Externally, they were pretty dusty when I acquired them. I have cleaned them somewhat but some dust and soil still lingers. The lenses are nice and clean with no scratches or dings. When I look through the lenses the wrong way so as to make things small, I see a black line across one side that I think is probably a fracture inside the binoculars. It looks to me like it is not on the eyepiece lens or the objective. Its apparent position makes me think that it was probably caused by the slight dent along the edge on the outside. I do not see it when I look through the binoculars normally. I think that it might be in a prism or a mirror. When I look through the wrong way of the other side, I see three tiny dark specs that look to me like soil or something on the inside of the binoculars. I do not see them when I look through the binoculars normally. As far as I can tell, neither the line nor the spots affect the view seen through these binoculars. I have provided photos of both problems as seen through the wrong ends of the binoculars. T is a small amount of enamel loss that you can get idea of by looking at my photos. Some of the enamel looks dull or rubbed. The leather strap shows some wear but it still feels reasonably supple and usable. I see one very slight dent along the edge next to a screw to the left of the âeoeNIKKOâe mark. I have provided a closeup of it. Another closeup shows how one of the eyepieces has a small chip on the outside rim and a fine crack that has apparently popped out a little of the plastic on the inside. The two eyepieces focus independently. For some reason that I have not figured out, I have to be approximately at least 16 feet away from an object to focus on it with the left side while I have to be approximately at least 32 feet away from an object to focus on it with the right side. As long as I am about 32 feet or more away from an object I do not have any trouble focusing on it with these binoculars and using both sides. A number has been etched into the metal. You can see it in a photo. Otherwise, they are fine and as shown. I guarantee this item to be as described and represented by the photos.
