Up for auction is this 1920's weaving sampler, just short of 2 yards in length and 17" wide. This sampler was made by a needlework student at my grandmother's needlework school, LaMer's Studio, in Manhattan, from 1909 - 1960's. Women, mostly European, from Switzerland, Austria, Germany and France, came to learn all aspects of needlework, and once they were skilled enough, were kept in her employ, during the depression these skills were invaluable, as there was always a demand for repair of clothing, as well as creation of beaded items for the wealthy. To be able to invisibly reweave a gentleman's wool suit or jacket, a ladies skirt, was a trade that could last a lifetime, and only the most skilled workers were always in demand! This piece does show the wear of years being stored in a cedar chest, it has yellowed from age, and does have some breakage of threads. Woven in cotton thread, it is an amazing example of the endless patterns of weaving one young woman was trying to perfect! A one of a kind study piece, for the antique needlework collector, or someone who cherishes the nostalgia of times gone by! Thank you for looking and good luck with your auctions!
