I recently came across, and am currently in the process of going through, several boxes of military items I stowed away years ago and had simply forgotten about. These boxes contained numerous U. S. canteens, insulated canteen covers, mess kits and mess kit utensils from both WWI and WWII. I will be listing these items on eBay until all the pieces are sold. If you collect U.S. militaria please take a moment to look at all the items I currently have listed before they’re all sold and gone forever. For auction is this genuine, vintage 1943, WWII, Vollrath manufactured, USGI, M1910, 1 quart canteen and USGI insulated 1943 WWII canvas cover carry case. The canteen is made of corrosive resistant steel and measures approximately 7 5/8” in height, 4.75” in width and 3” in depth. The canteen has its original 1943 dated black Bakelite plastic screw cap that remains firmly shackled to the threaded neck of the canteen. The canteen’s cap is in excellent shape showing no signs of cracking or chipping however, it is missing its cork gasket. The overall condition of this canteen is near excellent as the steel surface shows to have very little dings and dents. The canteen has a horizontal welded seam that remains solid and water tight. The corrosive resistant steel surface of the canteen retains its original smooth frosted appearance and looks fabulous for being 71 years old. Although I believe this canteen can be utilized as it was originally designed for, I would recommend thoroughly cleaning the inside of the canteen if you intend on drinking water from it as I am certain it hasn’t been washed in well over 50 years. The canteen’s insulated OD green canvas cover bears the very faint remains of the “U.S.” initials that were stamped in black. The two push-to-snap buttons close and open properly as they were designed and remain securely attached to the cover. The stitching on the carry case remains very strong and tight. The canvas cover does not have any rips, tears or holes in the canvas. However, please note; there are two very small sections on the cover's left side seam that are beginning to fray a little. These two spots are hardly noticeable and have not worn completely through therefore neither adversely affect the integrity of the cover. The canvas shows some light age spots but nothing out of the ordinary or what you would not expect to see on a 71 year old piece of WWII combat gear. There is one very tiny 1/16" spot of white paint on the cover's backside towards the bottom of the case. This is a very small spot and looks as if it could easily be removed with your fingernail. The cover's inside insulation remains perfectly intact. On the inside right flap there is a handwritten letter with four numbers that reads "M3741" on the inside of the left flap there is a very faint manufacturer's marking and what appears to be the date "1943". Please note; this printing is very hard to definitively decipher. On the bottom of the canteen case appears a stenciled ID number of sort that reads "M5572". Unfortunately, I do not know or have any idea what any of these markings mean or represent. Other than the noted issues I do not believe there are any other condition concerns that would be considered uncharacteristic about this cover. This canteen and cover is a good clean example of a genuine, used, WWII USGI canteen and cover any militaria collector would appreciate having in their military collection. These pieces are perfect for display and/or for wearing on a pistol web belt when dressed in authentic period fatigues during re-enactment outings.
