1945 Schick US Maritime Stadimeter Sextant. The Stadimeter is an optical rangefinder developed by Bradley Allen Fiske an officer in the United States Navy. It was designed for gunnery purposes, but its first sea tests, conducted in 1895, showed that it was equally useful for fleet sailing & navigation. The stadimeter uses a system of mirrors, as in a sextant, to bring two images into coincidence. In practice, a sailor would identify a distant ship, adjust the stadimeter for its mast-head height ( a figure available in published accounts), brings the image of the mast-head into coincidence with the water line, and read the distance on the instruments drum. Stadimeters were widely used in World War 1 and again in World War 2. Appears to be in fully functional condition with original box. The only problem I can find is t is old tape around the extra lense which I did not remove. Box is scratched (I touched up the scratches) but still very nice and measures 11 1/2" square and 5 1/2" deep. Includes original adjustment tools. Write with questions and thanks for looking.
