This auction is for a complete vintage 1947 KINGSWAY FLORENTINE figural chess set. These 32 highly detailed playing pieces are molded in red and white plastic and are represented by people of that long-ago period and animals (horses and elephants). Kings are 4 1/8 inches tall. All pieces are felted and in excellent condition. One white knight has a small red mark on its base. Each piece is marked KINGSWAY INC on the front of their bases and KINGSWAY FLORENTINE Trade Mark on the back of the base. In addition, each piece has a small circle on the front with a letter that denotes their board position ~ K for King, Q for Queen and so forth. This set comes in the original, matching red latching hard-case with a carrying handle. The case might be leather but I am not certain.Handle and latches are very nice and work well. Case is good with some corner bumping. Upper left front corner is wrinkled. Interior of case is lovely. It has a baize-covered molded insert where the chess pieces rest. The insert is removable. The case measures 16 1/2 inches x 8 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches. This set includes a pristine instruction book with historical information and illustrations about each piece. The book discuses how chess pieces were based upon real-life Kings and Queens and mimicked the power these figures held. The Kings power was absolute.
