This rare space toy made by Linemar (Marx Japan) HYDROGEN POWERED SERVICE STATION & FIRE CHIEF CAR was produced in the mid 20th century when the linemar artist and engineers were at the pinnacle of their field. It has a Deco streamline look with chrome Jet-like projections in front. Looks like it can take off and fly at any moment. The very unusual motor mechanism has a wind-up and a friction inertia toy combined into one. Printed on the hydrogen filling station are warnings such as ‘DANGER: ATOMIC RADIATION DO NOT APPROACH CLOSER THAN ONE MILE WITHOUT GEIGER COUNTER AND ATOM PROOF CLOTHES’. The car is attached to the hydrogen fuel station with a spring loaded,locking attachment device. When it is inserted into the station and a crank is turned up to speed in the back, a release button on the top is pressed and the car takes off rolling away from the station. The toy is in excellent condition. There are some minor scratches mainly onthe rear of the car where it contacts the service station and around edges of carport. The cars fins on the rear fenders are excellent replacements. Great bold graphics accentuate the design, one of the finest examples of furturistic artistry in tin toys .
