Vintage Original from many years ago Jan. 1961, Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Railroad Company Passenger Train Ferry Dining Car Syracuse China Co. CHESSIE PATTERN White w/Cobalt Blue Dinner Plate. White - background. Pinstrip - cobalt blue and goldish brown. Logo of Train Ferry Service Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in black. Measures approx. 9 7/8" diameter. Backstamped very clearly: "C Syracuse China USA 90 and 11 dots" with first one missing which indicates January 1961 production date. Plate is in good condition other than there is a crow's foot in center of plate on top, but not bottom. I tried to get pictures of it, but it was difficult to get to show. See pictures for details. A very nice Original C&O Ferry Service china item for collector of railroadiana memorabilia.From 1900 to 1920 most of the C&O's lines tapping the rich bituminous coal fields of southern West Virginai and eastern Kentucky were built, and the C&O as it was known throughout the rest of the 20th Century was essentially in place.In 1910 C&O merged the Chicago, Cincinnati & Louisville RR into its system. This line had been built diagonally across the state of Indiana from Cincinnati to Hammond in the preceding decade. This gave the C&O a direct line from Cincinnati to the great railroad hub of Chicago.Also in 191 0, C&O interests bought control of the Kanawha and Michigan and Hocking Valley lines in Ohio, with a view to connecting with the Great Lakes through Columbus, OH. Eventually anti-trust laws forced C&O to abandon its K&M interests, but it was allowed to retain the Hocking Valley, which operated about 350 miles (560 km) in Ohio, including a direct line from Columbus to the port of Toledo, and numerous branches southeast of Columbus in the Hocking Coal Fields. But there was no direct connection with the C&O's mainline, now hauling previously undreamed-of quantities of coal. To get its coal up to Toledo and into Great Lakes shipping, C&O contracted with its rival Norfolk & Western to carry trains from Kenova, WV to Columbus. N&W, however, limited this business and the arrangement was never satisfactory. In 1947 the Pere Marquette Railway was merged into the much larger Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. For many years thereafter, the Michigan rail/marine operations were known simply as the “Pere Marquette District of the C&O Railway.” Ferry service continued and expanded for a time, but by the mid-1970’s , the C&O and its rival Lake Michigan ferry operators contended that their services were no longer economical to operate. High fuel and labor costs, and faster, more efficient train handling and routing had rendered the ferries obsolete. The ferry operators were ultimately successful in their abandonment efforts, with routes systematically abolished beginning in 1978. The last cross-lake railroad ferry ended service on November 16, 1990 when the former C&O Railway car ferry Badger made the final trip between Kewaunee and Ludington, thus closing the final chapter of a near-century-old institution The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway traced its origin to the Louisa RR of Louisa County, VA, begun in 1836, and the James River & Kanawha Canal Co., also begun in Virginia in 1785.
