Vintage 22 in. Knickerbocker SMOKEY THE BEAR N Mint Offered for auction is this vintage plush "Official Smokey The Bear" stuffed animal. Made by The Knickerbocker Toy Company of Middlesex, NJ. Knickerbocker held the license for Smokey from the 1960's to 1977, but moved their factory in 1968 from NY to NJ. So that dates this bear from somew between 1968 and 1977. In 1944 Albert Staehle created Smokey Bear to use as a symbol for a United States Forest Service fire safety program. In 1950, a bear cub was burned in a fire in New Mexico. He required medical attention, was named Smokey and ultimately ended up at the National Zoo in Washington, DC w he became the living symbol of the advertising campaign. He is famous for the saying Remember only you can prevent forest fires. This Smokey Bear is a large size, about 22" tall. His upper body is a brown plush, with a yellow plush face. His pants are made of denim with plush brown upper feet. He has a greyish silver plastic badge and belt.
