Up for auction is a cool vintage porcelain sign. I'm guessing 20's or 30's since the concept of Driving Carefully seems like a new idea in the message of this sign: STOP THIS KILLING! DRIVE CAREFULLY implying that horses didn't run over people, I guess. It is a very cool looking graphic, showing a policeman holding a dead child. It measures 20 1/4 inch wide by 24 1/4 inch tall. It is on a very thick piece of steel. (heavy) It is very old, NOT A REPRODUCTION. It says it was made by American Valve and Enameling Corp, Indianapolis, Indiana. As you can see from my user id, I am not a sign man, I sell guitars for a living, so please bear with me and ask any questions and I will try to answer them. I saw this sign while I was making my "rounds" and I thought it was cool and somebody might appreciate it. As you can see it has a good deal of rust staining, and I did not attempt to clean this in any way for fear of using something too strong. But, I am sure it can be improved greatly with a simple cleaning. Also, you will note t is a brown area off-center going up and down w the porcelain itself is cracked off and it rusted. The man I got it from said it was mounted to a telephone pole in an alley and a truck bent back the one side and then he took it down and straightened it. He did a good job and the sign is fairly straight and flat now. read more
