Up for auction is this nice vintage violin (for repair) which I recently purchased for your consideration...any assistance on age and/or maker would be appreciated, as always. I don't profess to be a violin expert, but have sold a handful over the past year or so (viewable in my recent feedback). Please let me know if you require additional photos or information. I'm limited to twelve photos in the auction, but will be happy to send larger photos to you via email. Approximate dimensions are as follows: Lower bout: 8 1/8" (20.6cm)...Upper Bout: 6 11/16" (17cm)...Back, from end to w it meets button: 14 1/8" (36cm)...Overall length: 23 1/4" (59cm)...Ribs: 1 1/4" (32mm) The violin is unmarked, with no label and has a beautiful distressed patination, and crazing on the varnish when viewed under a loupe. The top is spruce, which has a warm chestnut-colored patina from age. The rest is flamed maple. The top/table has an open edge at the bottom rib adjacent to the saddle on the treble side, approximately 2" (51mm) in length. The top/table also has a slightly open crack adjacent to the saddle on treble side...extending 1" (25mm) from the purfling (which is not cracked). The top/table has another small crack on the treble side adjacent to the shoulder...but I can't determine if it's open or closed. The bridge area looks good and free of cracks. The 2-piece back has no cracks. Looking inside the body through the tailgut-button hole, I see no upper or lower cleats. The rear of pegbox/scroll has an old closed crack or hairline, as you can see, but it's only on the backside. Neck and ebony fingerboard are square, and the neck and shoulder are tight with no looseness. The treble side of shoulder has an old hairline/closed crack approximately 3/4" (19mm) in length. The end button is not cracked. Inlaid purfling fully intact. Bass bar intact. Sound post is loose within the body. Interior has full upper & lower lining with 4 corner blocks visible. Top and bottom blocks intact. The violin was found in an early-1900s leattte softshell case (not a coffin) which is in poor condition...but retains the full handle and all latches. It also smells clean, with no musty or odd odors, so it will suffice for shipping and storage on your end. Included in this auction are the three old ebony pegs, tailpiece & end button, and chinrest I found intact on this violin (it had no strings or bridge). Please let me know if you require additional information or photographs.Local pick-up is always free & welcomed in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago, and I'm flexible on days/times. Professional packaging AND insured shipping to the continental United States will be $28. Alaska, Hawaii, and International bidders please contact me for a quote. Why Buy New? Thanks for viewing this auction...all the best to you in your bidding. I'm sorry, but I omitted the small, closed hairline on the treble f-hole...from the bottom tip extending up to the purfling....
