This is a wonderfully old dead flame Adams & Westlake No. 250 Rock Island Railroad lantern. A dead flame lantern protects the flame with air going through vents and out the chimney. The lantern has a clear globe with ADLAKE KERO in raised letters. The Adlake Kero was one of Adlakes top selling lanterns. On October 21, 1874, Mr. Adams and Mr. Westlakes companies joined forces to create the Adams and Westlake Company (Adlake). The resulting organization became the most successful railroad lantern company ever. The top of the lanterns chimney has the following in raised letters THE ADAMS & WESTLAKE CO., CHICAGO-ELKHART-NEW YORK, ADLAKE NO. 250 KERO, ROCK ISLAND Around the rim of the top has the following in raised letters MADE IN U.S.A. PATD NOV. 26-1911, APR 1-1913-MAY 9-1922-CANADA 1921-1923-PATS. PENDING. The lantern is in A- condition, weighs a little over 2 lbs. and stands 16 from the base to the top of the handle and over 9 from the base to the top of the chimney.
