Here is an interesting old color photo/ poster of the historic 1948-49 Cuban baseball team, the Almendares. This team, first known as The Blues after their uniform color, later known as The Scorpions, became the Champion of the first ever Caribbean Series games in 1949.Aside from the historical nature of this team, it is also notable for the numerous American players from Major and Minor Leagues, as well as from the Negro League, who played with them in the Cuban Winter League. One such player who contributed well to this team in the Series, but never made a "hit" in the American big league, was CHUCK CONNORS, who later fared much better as an actor in the famed RIFLEMAN TV series. He is pictured in this photo in the middle row, 4th from the left. I don't know why the caption lists him as "Ken Connors" - whether a typographical error, nickname, or perhaps the Cubans' best effort at pronouncing his given name, "Kevin". I have read several articles on his participation with the Almendares, some of which called him Chuck, others Ken. In any case, Chuck Connors' image is unmistakeable in this team photograph!* * * * *Please see the full list of players, below, for other notables who played on this team:" CAMPEON 1948-49ALMENDARES ""Tercera fila, de izquierda a dercha ( Third row , from left to right ): Gilberto Valdivia , Avelino Canizares, read more
