Offered is a Augusto (aka Augustus) Pollastri 4/4 violin. Made in Bologna, Italy. The label is damaged, nevertheless it is readable enough to see that it is a Pollastri, and I believe the first word of the name on the label is Augusto. The word 'Bononiae' (Latin for 'Bologna'), as the place of origin, is readable. The date is not readable, nevertheless I believe it is before 1910.
is what Wikipedia says about Augusto Pollastri: Augusto Pollastri - (b. Bologna , 11 March 11, 1877 - d. Bologna, Nov.9, 1927) was a renowned Italian violin maker, older brother to Gaetano Pollastri . Started his career as an apprentice in Raffaele Fiorini 's studio. Augusto's father was a miller and an amateur musician. Augusto was exposed to music early on, he also enjoyed visiting the shop of a famous violin maker Raffaele Fiorini , w he started to perform small services in the shop, which led to an apprenticeship with maestro Fiorini. By the age of 20, Augusto had devoted himself entirely to the activity which had inspired him (violin making), showing remarkable artistic gifts. Towards the end of Raffaele Fiorini's life, Augusto took over the workshop. He quickly became famous as maker and restorer. By 1927 (the year of his death), Augusto obtained official recognition in his art: the Cross of Merit and Gold Medals at the Geneva Exhibition and the United Exhibitions of the "Littriale' in Bologna". [1 ] For thirty years Augusto Pollastri managed one of the most important luthier's Atelier in Bologna. After the passing of Raffaele Fiorini, his brother Gaetano Pollastri joined him. Augusto's production was of an astounding quality and class, but unfortunately not very high in numbers. His students include his brother Gaetano Pollastri and Marco Dobresovitch. This violin has beautifully executed inlaid purfling with 'Bee' stings. Scroll work is excellent. Masterfully carved f holes. Two piece back of distinct medium curl. The ribs, neck and scroll are similar. The table is medium grain widening towards the edges. The edge work is superb. Ebony pegs fitted, which work well. Sound post is set. Vintage ebony tail piece with inlaid MOP flower, and fine tuner on 'e' string. The original finger board, nut and saddle are ebony. Guarneri type ebony chin rest. Although not independantly authenticated, it is my opinion that this is an original Augusto Pollastri based on my personal research. Measurements (all approx.): Overall Length: 23-1/2"/597mm (not including end pin) LOB: 14-1/8"/359mm (not including end pin or button) UB: 6-1/2"/165mm CB: 4-1/4"/108mm LB: 8"/203mm Rib Height: 1-5/16"/33mm Vibrating String Length: 12-3/4"/324mm (note: the bridge could be moved back to achieve a 330mm VSL) Condition: T are 5 old top cracks. All cracks appear to have been repaired, and are tight and stable. The upper bass side top edge has been chipped, and not repaired. The lower bass side top edge also was chipped , however repaired. No back or rib cracks that I can see. The violin has been 'lightly' refinished with a thin over varnish applied. The neck surely has been reset at least once. T is a ~1/8" strip adjacent to the bass side neck heel that appears to have been filled with wood putty (apparently part of the rib was damaged in this area). The button looks like it separated from the back during a neck reset, and has been satisfactorily glued back . The body has obviously been opened up several times, and t is some excess glue visible at the top to rib seam upon close inspection. No bass bar or sound post problems. No open cracks or open seams. All in all I would consider this violin to be in very good condition given its age. The strings are new Red Violin Super Sensitive Medium. Very good string to string balance, and plently of volume with excellent projection. In my opinion, this violin would be suitable for concert/solo performance. Vintage very good condition Lifton case included. No bow. Sold as/is, as shown. Refund Policy: I offer a 7 day money back re...
