The Macintosh IIfx was introduced in 1990 as the fastest Mac. At introduction it cost from US $9,000 to US $12,000, depending on configuration. It had several code-names, including Stealth, and Blackbird.
Dubbed "Wicked Fast" by Apple's Product Manager, the system runs at a clock rate of a then impressive 40 MegaHertz, it has 32 KB of Level 2 cache, six NuBus slots and includes a number of proprietary ASICs and coprocessors designed to speed up the machine further. The 40 MHz speed refers to the main logic board clock (the bus), the Motorola 68030 CPU, and the computer's Motorola 68882 FPU. The machine has eight RAM slots, for a maximum of 128 MB RAM, an enormous amount at the time when 1 MB SIMMS cost $99.00. The IIfx features specialized high-speed (80 ns) RAM using 64-pin SIMMs, at a time when all other Macintosh models used 30-pin SIMMs. The extra pins were a separate path to allow latched read and write operations. It is also possible to use parity memory modules, being the only stock 68K Macintosh to support them. The IIfx also includes two special dedicated processors for sound and serial communications. These I/O chips featured a pair of embedded 6502 CPUs, meaning that this Mac also has the core of two Apple II machines inside it. The IIfx uses SCSI as its hard disk interface, as had all previous Macintosh models since the Macintosh Plus. The IIfx requires a special black-colored SCSI terminator for external drives (included). This example of the IIfx was originally purchased for use as a graphics workstation On April 7, 1994. It has all 128MB of RAM, a special 525MB hard disk drive with a high mean time between failures (MTBF). Comes with the original extended keyboard and mouse. The monitor can be included if desired for extra cost. Also available are an external Apple second generation CD-ROM and LaCie 2GB HDD at additional cost. Write for a quotation. Two NuBus cards are installed. One is an Asante Ethernet card with both a DB-15 and a RJ-45 interface. The second card is a Radius 24-bit Accelerated Video card. The machine is loaded with the Born Again program which allows it to run 32-bit clean with Macintosh Operating System 8.1. OS 8.1 has many advantages such as the use of RAM Doubler bringing the usable RAM to 256MB. Hard drives supporting the Macintosh HFS Extended format can also be used under OS 8.1 The internal HP 525MB HDD contains the system software and application programs. The condition of this computer is very good to excellent. The housings are the original gray color. Over 25 application programs are installed, including MicroSoft Office, Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Adobe Type Manager, Calendar Creator, and many games. Internet applications include iCab 2.9.9, Internet Explorer 4.01, Netscape Navigator 3.01, NCSA Telnet, Fetch, as well as Apple's and Adobe's desk accessory programs. In addition to running Mac OS 8.1, the IIfx is also able to run A/UX a UNIX based operating system. I am also including a May 1990 issue of MACWORLD Magazine which details the IIfx and all of its features. This system is part of a large Apple Macintosh collection that I am beginning to sell as we are downsizing. I have tested the machine and all of the programs. Everything works very well and the machine is quite reliable. It boots slowly and then runs very fast as you use it. I have invested $400 in the initial unit and $225. in the custom built for purpose memory. I really love this unit but it is time for someone else to enjoy owning it. I am willing to pack and ship this system, but if possible I recommend picking it up here in northern Illinois. If the winning bidder chooses to have the system shipped it will take me a couple of days to properly pack the machine. If shipped I will use FedEx Ground which is normally safer and less expensive than other carriers. THE $25. SHIPPING COST FOR FEDEX HOME DELIVERY IS AN ESTIMATE ONLY. EBAY DOES NOT CALCUL...
