DESCRIPTION: is a little back-story. I purchased these chairs in 1998 from a Dearborn Michigan Estate Sale. The couple had refurnished their spacious Cape Cod home in the early 1980`'s and moved all the older pieces to the basement. The basement was full of American Art Deco pieces from the 1930's. I was told that many of the pieces came from the Downtown Detroit Hudson's Department store. I bought as many pieces I could that day and put them in my "look but don't touch " Art Deco sitting room. The chairs have basically been in climate controlled storage since I purchased them. In the summer of 2000 , I was looking at an Auction Guide from 1994(Name escapes me L I never thought I would not have another sighting). In that guide I saw an identical set of chairs that were attributed to Gilbert Rhode for The Troy Sunshade Co. That is the only documentation I have ever seen of these chairs. So collectors with a Troy Catalog should be able to help out with the specifics. As American Modern / Deco collector in Metro Detroit I am fortunate to come across many significant pieces of the period. I have seen Gilbert Rohde's work for Howell , Herman Miller and Heywood Wakefield but these chairs have always stood out to me. The use of bent brushed steel and leather sets these apart from other Rhode works I have come across. While I see cues from Kem Weber and Warren McArthur these chairs are uniquely Rohde. Life changes and new finds have moved these pieces out of my rotation and I am proud to offer them up for bids. Please look at the pictures and read all auction text thoroughly. If you have any question at all I would be more than happy to help.CONDITION : Pictures tell most of the story. I cleaned the chairs when I first brought them home and have only keep them dust free since. A professional could bring these to perfection in no time. They are solid, sturdy and well preserved but are sold as is/as found so please read below and if you have a question ask.The Leather on these chairs in in excellent vintage condition. It is a soft ,supple shiny full grain leather that has the patina of 70 years .I have seen Troy stools in this shade leather so I assume this material is the original covering. T are areas on the seams along the seat and backs that have been separated since I found them. Details follow: (All measurements were taken looking straight on at the chair with the seat facing forward)Chair #1 (chair with label) Seam on the left of the seat cushion has a 14" separation along the seam. The right seat seam shows no separation. The front of the back seat cushion shows no separation on either seam. The right arm of the chair is missing the last tack nail on the underneath inner side. All other tacks are in place. The right arm has all tacks in place. The left side of the seat cushion has a tiny 1/3" discoloration on the leather and t is two 1/8" scuffs. The rear of the backrest (the side that would face the wall) has two small chair rail or wall scuffs ~ the right side measuring ¾" and the left side measuring ¼". The back panel has all tacks in place and no separation or tears. Please note that panel on back of backrest is naugahyde material and not leather . Chair #2 (chair with no label) Seam on the left seat cushion has a 13" separation along the seam. The seam on the right of this bottom cushion has a 17" separation. The area on the leather to the right of this separation does have some tiny areas of flaking. The front of the seat back on the right side seam has a 7 ½" separation. The left arm rest has no flaws and all tacks in place. The right arm rest has a slight scuff of ½" on the rear edge and again, all tacks are in place. The back panel of the chair has a ½" light scuff on the left side and right side w the chair would have rubbed on the wall or a chair rail. T is a 2 ½" remnant of tape reside on the left scuffed rear area. T is a 1 ¾" tear (slit) on the right seat cushion near the front. This is the only area on the 2 chairs that has an area of concern that is not directly o...
