ART NOUVEAU AND ART DECO LIGHTING ALASTAIR DUNCAN "Art Nouveau's high point, around 1900, coincided with the advent of commercial electricity. This was the basis of a revolution in lamp design which released a torrent of original work by some very talented people. Lamps were freed from the restrictions imposed by fuel and wicks, and artists, artisans, architects and interior designers became preoccupied with the new discovery. Working in bronze, ceramics and magnificent stained glass, they designed lamps that imitated nature and embellished its most elaborate forms. Louis Comfort Tiffany is perhaps the name that comes first to mind, and certainly Tiffany Studios were extraordinarily prolific and popular, at that time. But in Europe, too, and especially in Fance, sculptors, architects, engineers and designers of all finds produced a wealth of lighting fixtures tablelamps, chandeliers, chandeliers, most of them featuring a curious mixture of motifs from flowers, insects and birds to, above all, women. After World War 1, however, there was a complete turnabout in taste, and Art Nouveau, the essence of decorativeness, was replaced by what came to be known as Art Deco, functionalism without frills.
