Up for bid is a one of a kind item. This piece of American history is truly spectacular and dear to my heart and I hope it finds a good home. This piece is a 1940's period model of a Boeing B-17 "Flying Fortress" C or D series. Overall dimensions are 62 1/2 inch wingspan and the fuselage is approximately 42 inches. The plane also weighs between 22 and 23 pounds. Mike from American Pickers would say this piece is "large and in charge." This model was hand crafted from sheet copper with all of the parts hand manufactured and assembled by soldering. The props are made from a light weight wood which I believe to be Balsa. The copper was fitted over wood in certain sections of the plane, most noticeably the engines. The attention to detail was great and the patina is spectacular. This model was displayed for many years in a Travel Agency window. In order to "demilitarize" the model all of the original machine gun mounts were eliminated allowing the model to resemble a more commercial aircraft. The model rests on a black metal stand which is also included in the sale. The piece does have some condition issues where the copper metal has worn through to the wood and those are only really evident on the engines. Please look at the pictures. Years of display have had their effect, but I'm sure the plane is currently stable. Whoever built this piece of Americana had an intimate knowledge of the Boeing B-17, it's dimensions and place in American history. You won't find anything even similar to this icon. The pictures don't do this piece justice and I believe it would have to be the centerpiece to ANY trench art collection. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.
