Recent Estate Acquisition! Vintage 10KY Gold Cameo Pink Shell Brooch From the Victorian era Women began collecting cameos to prove cultural status during the Elizabethan period. At the same time, tourist travels to the ruins of Pompeii were on the rise and women began collecting shell and lava cameos as souvenirs to remember their travel. Cameos have been popular since ancient times. Initially, cameos were carved from hard stones such as carnelian or sardonyx. Later Italian artisans began carving cameos from sea shells found along the Italian Coastline. During the second half of the 19th Century the Cameo became an essential item of female adornment. This cameo features Bacchante, a female follower of the god of wine and fertility, a Victorian favorite. Many of these cameos featured young maidens with vine leaves and grapes threaded through their hair. This 10KY Gold bezel is very attractive. The brooch measures 1 3/8" x 1 1/4". Pinback works properly. Genuine shell cameo in good condition. No chips or cracks. Fold down bale can be worn as a pendant. The weight is 8.6 grams. Stamped, 10K. The frame is 10-karat yellow gold. The Victorians loved cameos and thought they were the "Perfect Souvenir" from their grand tour of the continent! GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION!
