Though two of this girl’s issues may make her less appealing to the advanced collector, she will make a lovely addition to the intermediate and beginning collector’s collection—also a great doll for your child or grandchild to play with while you display your prized Betsy dolls! Her wig/barrettes/body/arms/legs also make her a great ‘parts’ doll for the advanced collector. Please read both her pros and cons before you bid because she has been played with, and is not mint. You will find that I am honest, to the point of being ‘picky’ in my description. Betsy’s positive points: -- TOSCA to REDDISH hair rooted into a skull cap with BOTH ORIGINAL BARRETTES and NO BALD SPOTS; a small thin area on top from odd rooting done at the factory-- pretty pink face coloring with NO CHEEK RUBS, vivid blush and no missing painted features-- lovely GREEN/GRAY eyes with perfect upper lashes -- eyes open and close on their own and will flutter at you with a slight shake-- arms are on original rubber band, not loose, and will hold poses nicely (A little band has been added inside of the original to help it hold snuggly.)-- knees bend with ease and hold a pose well-- NO KNEE CRACKS, though right knee has a very, very slight flare -- only seam cracked is the crotch (see description below)-- lighter EVEN SKIN TONE overall—not faded or yellowed by exposure to the sun or cigarette smoke-- NO STAINS-- McCall mark in a circle on her back-- I have not forced her to sit.-- She stands on her own without much persuasion (legs are a little swingy as are most). Not-so-positive points: -- crotch crack (very narrow)-- very light, small yellowish area on upper forehead next to bangs-- lower portion of one head side seam is narrowly open from neck to ear-- lower legs have very thin, light lines, which is common—hey! I’m over 50 also and Betsy’s legs look much better than mine! -- head has been reattached with elastic cording—It is not really a downside because many times a head that is reattached (elastic cording is all that you can get back up in there) is much sturdier than one with an original band that has loosened with age which makes the head ‘floppy’. However, a head without a sturdy original band might be of concern to a ‘purist’ collector. I want to be up-front with my customers so that they are not disappointed with what they purchase—a lovely, pre-loved Betsy! Clothes: Betsy is wearing an early 1960’s Brownie Girl Scout uniform. I saw an outfit exactly like this one on a Mint-in-Box 1960s 8 ¼” Brownie G.S. doll made by Effanbee. Original items include an untagged cotton dress (excellent/near mint condition; 2 square metal snaps; no problems), felt hat with printed Brownie emblem (small holes in the felt); orange ribbon tie (excellent with a tiny bit of fraying on the ends), pair of brown socks (no runs, stretched on tops, small holes at bottom seam); and a single brown shoe (marked on bottom: ‘Made in U.S.A./ 8’). Effanbee’s doll, Fluffy?, is a chubby doll, so these items are a bit big on our slim Betsy.Also included is a vintage? foil paper Brownie trefoil. I have added a pair of vintage original Betsy shoes. Both shoes still have solid knobs and only the teeny beginnings of a split in the ‘buttonholes’ of the straps. I do not button the shoes any more to insure the integrity of these 50-year-old items!These items came to me through e-bay purchases.
