This very pretty vintage British Admiralty nautical chart is titled "SCOTLAND - WEST COAST, FIRTH OF CLYDE, CLOCH POINT TO LITTLE CUMBRAE I, INCLUDING LOCH STRIVEN." Publication information: London, published according to act of parliament, 1956.Small corrections: 1964. Chart # 1907Dimensions: 28" X 48" (71cm X 122cm) This chart shows the south east part of the Island of Bute, Great and Little Cumbrae Islands, Ayrshire, Largs, Rothesay sound, Renfrewshire, Loch Striven, etc. It is in superb condition. Never used. There is one small light smudge the size of a thumbprint at Rothesay Sound. Please look at all 12 photos carefully, as most details, information, and flaws are visible in them. NOTE: British Admiralty charts of this vintage are not only rare but extremely difficult to find in such excellent condition as this one. Many of the charts in my collection have never actually been used and so are very clean. They were printed on heavy, good quality cream-colored paper, folded neatly in half, and stored on board ships in heavy canvas folios. These are not copies or scans or reproductions. They are original charts created by the British Admiralty. The craft of the19th century British Admiralty charts was particularly beautiful and well-detailed. They are, in every sense, works of art. (Compare them to modern nautical charts, which give very little land detail, and you'll see the difference.) Many of these charts include images of topographical features and landmarks, coastal elevations, and shoreline diagrams--drawings of how the shoreline would appear to navigators arriving on a ship. These diagrams usually include hills and mountains, lighthouses, tall buildings, and towers. The charts also often show minute detail of ports and harbors, with streets, palm trees, huts, buildings, docks, jails, railway lines, and churches identified. For this reason many British Admiralty charts could act as land maps; they provide fascinating historical information about the location and its inhabitants. The United Kingdom Hydrographic office became part of the British Admiralty in 1795. Its first chart was published in 1800. Admiralty chart drawings were based on information provided by a surveying team; the original team and their ship is usually named below the title. The details of these surveys were drawn on copper plates and engraved as prints. They were regularly updated and corrected, with dates of corrections recorded in the lower left corner. Corrections were often small, merely indicating new beacons or lights or changed depths. For this reason, rather than create a whole new drawing for each small correction, the corrections were simply added to the original drawing on the original copper plate and reprinted. This is why nautical charts often have many dates noted on them. The oldest date (usually below the title) indicates the date the survey was conducted. The publication date at the bottom of chart indicates the date the chart was first drawn, engraved, and printed. The correction dates are self evident. The last correction date will tell you the date that this particular version of the engraving was actually printed. In 1808 Admiralty charts began to be provided for sale to the general public.
