These are by the famous Jennings Brothers Foundry, circa 1935, and clearly stamped JB on the side of each bookend. They also say CED which stands for the great artist and sculptor Cyrus E. Daillin of New England. He was commissioned to create a bronze statue in front of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, called Appeal to the Great Spirit. It showed a native american indian chief in full eagle feather headdress or war bonnet, on an indian pony or horse, bareback and naked save for a loincloth, arms spread wide, palms up, head thrown back, appealing to his God in the sky. Classic native american indian features and pose. Daillin was quite a famous sculpture and this statue still stands today in Boston. These measure 8 inches tall by almost 7 inches long and weigh 9 pounds the pair. Made of heavy cast pot metal with the famous Jennings Brothers Foundry rich bronze finish with great patina and very little loss. One base has some discoloration and verdigris of the bronze finish at the bottom. These are rare anyways but t is something even rarer about this set. Every other set of these I have seen in the past 19 years of collecting bookends has had damage to the arms of these or the horse's legs. You will always see the arms not match the other bookend or bent down. A weak point in the sculpture. Well, these are intact and nice. Thanks for looking and please see my other auctions for more antique and vintage cast metal bookends and doorstops that I will combine on shipping whenever possible.
