T's always a reason for a small gift...inexpensive but fun...great memories always abound when we give these gifts to people...small enough for a child but adult enough for wearing on a business suit. And if you have a need for those very limited office or club gift exchanges. You don't even need to find a small box to wrap this in...that comes along with each piece (and it's FREE). These pieces of jewelry are the work of Betty and Beth, two characters if t ever were. The buttons which form of the basic elements of the designs are found through estate sales, garage sales, and stashes of friends and family. Some of the buttons hail from the 1930s and 40s and some are much newer. Neither Betty nor Beth claim to be button experts and focus on the art and craft of the jewelry and not so much the collectable nature of the buttons (however, t are collectable buttons on some items). Some of the buttons they use in the pins, brooches, bracelets, earrings, necklaces and clips are antique, some vintage and some modern. Many are imported glass. They sort through about 1000 buttons to find the buttons that will be used in a typical typical, but sometimes the buttons don't go well together and may sit in a jar for a month before the correct combination is found. T could be something on the order of 3000 buttons in a quart jar...the ladies sort through a lot of buttons to find the few that they use. When Betty sits down to crochet one of these pieces she starts by deciding what kinds of colors she may be wanting to work with , then sorts through a whole lot of buttons (she and Beth keep them in quart and 1/2 gallon jars) and once she has picked out between 20 and 40 buttons, she looks at the group to make sure the colors work together and she sits down and starts the bracelet itself. It does take between 20 and 40 buttons...all with shanks...and t is a certain amount of planning that goes on even though it may look like a random assemblage of buttons. The crochet hook is extremely small so that it can fit through most of the button shanks, but Betty still finds that keeping a needle threader next to her chair is helpful for those smaller shank holes. This is not a fast process! The crocheted wrist band is elastic so it fits most wrists (and Betty was blessed with large wrists...she knows the problem). The elastic band is made of either gold or silver colored thread depending on the color of the buttons. These handmade pieces of art could include a variety of button types...mother of pearl (MOP), shell, abalone, Bakelite, metals, plastics, glass, clay, wood and more. The project originally started with themes of daisy's (they are fond of margarite daisies) or roses and other flowers along with stars and heart shaped buttons. The ladies also use pearls, silver beads (and other precious and semi-precious metals), along with semi-precious stones, gems and porcelain to complete their work. The handcrafted jewelry is a little different now, but the same care and design efforts that they applied in the beginning are still applied today.
