Offered is a wonderful clockwork cog driven emery wheel Victorian pocket lighter. These pocket lighting devices became popular in the late 1800s,they used a small Emery wheel which when turned sharply against a piece of metal would produce the required sparks to ignite the fusee or wick. In order for the wheel to be turned fast enough it was enclosed within a brass cage and combined with a series of cogs, this cage was then fitted inside a metal container with a hole at one end for the sparks to come from and a tube along the side to take the fusee. A key was connected through the metal outer case into the geared mechanism, this key was used to turn the gears and produce the sparks. In a way these lighters could be considered as disposable as once the emery wheel was worn down or broken it could no longer be used and was likely thrown away, hence why so few survive today. This example is unmarked, yet likely French in origin and is in outstanding original condition, light surface marks,no brassing, one of the best I have been fortunate to own. Best of all the Emery wheel is complete and still sparks!! Please ask any questions, Please view my other lighters, Thank you and good luck, I provide proof of postage with all my items shipped, insurance is extra and must be requested at end of sale WORLDWIDE AIR MAIL IS $10 UK $7
