This is a wonderful and very striking old carved Mermaid sculpture. She is well carved. She has a great folk art - slightly primitive look. The bottom w she is a fish is chip carved and has many chipped out pieces giving the appearance of scales. She is about 30 inches tall. I bought this quite a few years ago. The lady I bought it from said it was found washed up on the beach in Santa Cruz California. I dont know exactly what is is. It may have come off a boat or ship. It could have just been a carving on its own. The carving has a grayish - sunbleached color and has the porous look that wood has that has been in the ocean (driftwood). I dont know what kind of wood it is. Its a medium weight - not the super-light wood that is often found as driftwood. It has an area on the bottom that has disentigrated or decayed. It is not active as its the same as it has been since I obtained it. It stands on its own but is a bit lopsidded. I displayed it with a small piece of driftwood push under the shorter edge. Cant find that piece now. But anything would work - cardboard, wood etc. T is a piece of the mermaids flowing hair that is missing. The 5th and 8th photos show the hair. T is a vertical line w the hair should be flowing sideways. Its hard to see from the front - more visible on side and back. he lady I bought it from said it was that read more
