This truly exceptional bike could be a museum piece. I was purchased in 1988 from the Montrose bike shop in California. It has a 55 cm center-to-center seat tube and a 57 cm center-to-center top tube. The owner thinks they may have built it up several years before he bought if from them. My guess is that it must have been a shop display gem that few could afford back then, so it sat in their window for awhile. The owner was a top level enthusiast, though he never raced. Starting in 1988, he used it to ride centuries with a friend three times a month, with regular shorter rides in between to maintain his fitness. His route was always some combination up-and-down Pacific Coast Highway, from Malibu, to Palos Verdes, and back up to "the rock" at Point Hueneme, or the other way around, always finishing at his home in Malibu. He is just recently ready to pass on this piece of this youth and so he asked me to put it up for auction. It has the corresponding patina of a bike that was cherished and meticulously cared for and maintained, but also used for its intended purpose. Also, he has asked me to sell it with NO RESERVE.
The entire frame appears to have been chromed, then the main tubes were painted a vibrant blue that has this fantastic quality due to the chrome trying to shine through under it. All of the cables are internally routed, resulting in a super clean appearance. The paint and chrome could use a good cleaning and polishing, but is in nice enough shape that it would not require full-on restoration. So far, it has simply been rinsed off so I could bring it into the house to take pictures for the listing. So...no smoke and mirrors here. The tube are dent fee and any scratches in the paint seem to only reach the chrome. If you need more detailed photos, please keep checking in here until I have a link to a flicker account set up. The main thing that makes this bike a real find, is the 100% Casati Pantographed, Classic Campagnolo Super Record Grouppo . It is unbelievable! The only part not on the bike (aside from pedals) are the Casati Pantograped brake levers which come with the sale and are new in the bag, ready to be installed. Even the original wheels with Record hubs and Casati marked Ambrosio tubular rims are in great shape. The rear wheel has a seven speed, 12-24 Regina CX-S cassette. Even the original skewers are intact with the Campy nuts on them. The owner usually rode his clinchers which are in a separate auction. They are Mavic MA40 rims with high flange Super Record hubs. Additional items sold with this bike are a Silca Pump with plastic Silca head, two used casettes (one Regina CX-S 13-21 and a Japanese one (not sure of the maker)) and another used chain. Also several rolls of Benotto handlebar tape. And of course the Casati Campy Super Record brake levers. Unfortunately, ebay only allows 12 photos, so again please see the link (eventually) for my flicker account for more photos. Internationally bidders are welcome, though you will have to pay the shipping cost if you win, which will be considerable considering the care that will have to be taken to package and send this irreplaceable bicycle. Domestic bidders also keep in mind that shipping costs may be a bit more than normal for the same reason. I have not packaged the bike and extras yet so that I have it out to answer questions during the auction if necessary. Consequently, I cannot give specific amounts for shipping costs to potential buyers. So please just know that this will be expertly and carefully packed, then insured for shipping so the cost will correspond to that. The "shipping cost" that ebay calculates will be wrong , so please ignore it. Also note: I do not use the fact that it needs to be shipped as another way to make a profit with the sale. I resent it when people do it to me, so I won't do it to you. That said, I'll repeat, the cost for packaging materials and shipping will correspond to the precious cargo....and UPS will take the profit on that. I only accept cash in person or paypal.
