Vintage Cepelia Warsaw Polish Painting on Glass, Madonna Kodenska, 1961 This is a gorgeous vintage reverse on glass painting of Madonna Kodenska (Madonna and Child). It has layered gold gilt leaf with reverse paint directly on the glass and then framed with a hand painted frame (greenish gray). The backing is cardboard with an embedded hanging ring. On the back of the painting is written in pencil, "MADONNA KODENSKA WARS2AWA 1961). Then there are two stickers applied by Cepelia. One is the official authentication sticker and the other is the Cepelia trade mark sticker. It looks as if there may have been an third sticker, there is a sticker residue under the Cepelia trademark sticker. There is also the artist signature (in pencil) at the bottom of the back, although I can't make out the actual name. This painting is modeled after the famous painting of the Madonna Koden. I've posted a picture of the original, and included the legend of the painting below. This beautiful painting is in excellent vintage condition. There are a two slight moisture spots on the cardboard backing. They are superficial and don't appear to have reached into the painting itself. About Cepelia:Cepelia was founded in 1949 in Warsaw, and is an association (kind of a cooperative) that managed a network of Polish artists in support of fine and folk arts throughout Poland. Throughout the 60+ years of existence, Cepelia has remained faithful to its fundamental goal promoting art rooted in Polish native traditions. Cepelia has successfully protected those values which could not provide enough support for the professional and folk artists. Cepelia has remained firmly rooted in the popular consciousness, with its trademark of a stylized rooster embodying for years a symbol of high quality of merchandize. The name came from the acronym CPLiA, (Centrala Przemysłu Ludowego I Artystycznego), rough translation: Folk and Art Industry Central. About Madonna Kodenska:The Madonna Kodenska is the anme of a famous painting originally from Spain. His nickname "Pious" originates from his sponsorship of a church in Kodeń and a related legend. The legend states that he fell ill and began a pilgrimage to Rome. After seeing a holy icon of the Madonna in a private Papal chapel, he was miraculously cured. Afterward he decided to steal the painting that he believed saved him, so that it could be enshrined in his new church in Kodeń. It is now known as Our Lady of Kodeń (or Madonna Kodenska), based on Our Lady of Guadalupe. For his crime, Sapieha was excommunicated by Pope Urban VIII. However, the excommunication was lifted in 1634 when Mikołaj agreed to represent papal interests and use his influence to oppose the marriage between King Władyslaw and the Protestant Princess Elisabeth of the Palatinate. The icon he "stole" was also given to the people of Kodeń. No documents attesting to the theft exist and it is possible the icon was simply purchased by Sapieha during a trip to Spain.
