Awesome old ceramic figurine of the mythical Hodag, a dragon-like reptilian creature "discovered" in Rhinelander, Wisconsin in 1893, which turned out to be a brilliant hoax. The Hodag since became the official symbol and mascot of Rhinelander, and a statue of the Hodag stands in front of its Chamber of Commerce. This souvenir figurine looks like it dates from the 1950's-era. It is cast in a glazed ceramic and hand-painted with beautiful detail and vivid color. The sculpting is mint, with every sharp spike on his back and all four horns on his head intact. The monster stands 4" tall on a 7.5" by 3" base that reads "HOME OF THE HODAG - RHINELANDER, WIS." on front. There is no manufacturer's mark that I can find, other than the number "3202" on the underside. If you collect bizarre old souvenirs, ceramic animals, or Wisconsin memorabilia, make your bid on this rare vintage Hodag.
