The eagle and sparrows are carved from bone and as you can see the eagle is made from multiple pieces. The detail in the carving is very crisp. These were originally on a fire screen, which unfortunately got destroyed in the Blitz in WW2 One of my Mother’s uncles was first mate on sailing ships and was on the oriental run for many years. Each time he returned, he would bring back items he had bought. She told me he would sail mainly to Shanghai and Hong Kong, with the occasional visit to Japan. She said this was Chinese, but I have no real way of knowing for certain if it is or if it originated in Japan. Certainly I inherited things from both countries. Her recollection was that the screen had a painted rocky heath with the eagle on a rock and the sparrows escaping from the scrub. As part of the wood of the frame was burnt, she removed the bone carvings, as she could not bear to part with them. As a small child I would use this as a jigsaw and it was possibly me that broke and lost a small part of the eagle’s claws, although I would have preferred to have blamed it on Hitler. I did on occasions try to get artists to paint a scene so that I could remount the pieces, but nobody seemed interested and the project never took place.
