Vintage Chinese Ox Blood Porcelain Bottle Vase This porcelain vase was purchased in Hong Kong in May 1974 and came from my father's estate. He was a world traveler and avid collector of Chinese and Asian art. A wonderful example of the beauty of the classic Langyao Hong or sang de boeuf glaze, also known as ox blood. This is a very thick and vitreous deep red glaze due to the copper content. The glaze was believed to be produced at the Kangxi imperial kilns at Jingdezhen during the early 17 th century. It is not unusual that drops of glaze accumulated at the foot or base of the vase. In this case they were ground off leaving a relatively smooth finish on the base. This vase is of a globular form with a medium-length neck that flares and then rolls downward. Perhaps because of the shape, the glaze did not completely cover the upper portion of the neck as portions of the crackled off-white appear toward the top. Both the outside and inside of the neck rim are off-white with a crackle finish in the glaze, often a trait in sang de boeuf, that primarily covers the neck area. A bit of the ox blood color comes through on the very top of the rim. The glaze coverage is relatively even over the vase, though t are several "flame" sections w the glaze cascades down the body of the vase. Please refer to photos. The vase is in very good condition. read more
