This lovely handcarved lidded box is made up of layers and layers of applied and carved lacquer that was probably much whiter in color, but it has mellowed to a warm ivory color over the years. Carved on the lid with an abundant explosion of flowers and leaves, t is a single bird hiding in the foliage in the upper left. Highly detailed, the sides are covered with repeating lozenges within banded borders. Measuring 4 inches long, 2 and 1/2 inches wide and 1 and 1/2 inches tall, this two piece lidded box probably originally held playing cards or jewelry. The inside lacquer is chipped as shown at one inside corner, and t are several small indents into the lacquer at the edges and t as photographed but this piece is otherwise in good condition.Marked on the bottom in tiny block letters "China", this is a beautiful and useful vintage piece of Chinese cinnabar. Please ask any questions prior to bidding, as all auctions are final and returns are not accepted, just as you cannot return an item to an antique shop, flea-market or auction house.
