This auction is for an AUTHENTIC CIVIL WAR M1850 INFANTRY SWORD manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Co., Chicopee, Mass.. The Ames name is found on both the scabbard and the blade. The name on the blade is inside an unraveled scroll. This scroll design was used on enlisted swords. What makes this sword very special is that it is engraved "To W. L. Pettit From B. F. Pettit, Pittsburg, Pa.". A little research shows that a William L. Pettit was a member of the 139th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry. He was an enlisted man. The sword is not in the best of conditions. T is a liberal amount of rust on the blade. I am not a sword expert BUT I BELIEVE that someone that knows what he is doing should be able to clean up the blade so that it looks fairly nice. The handle is missing the sharkskin but retains the cord that holds down the sharkskin. The rest of the handel just needs some good polishing , again, by someone who knows what he is doing. The scabbard leather is not in the best of condition. The leather might need to be replaced but the brass elements are still in pretty good shape. The upper brass section and the tip section are loose and removable. The tip brass is a little battered. I do know that a sword of this type can go for a large amount of money so I believe that the starting price we are offering is a real steal for someone who know what to do to repair it. Possibly someone from the Pettit family would love to have this back in their possession. The winner can All checks, Personel or Money Orders, must clear prior to shipping.
