I am pretty sure this unusual and interesting vintage item is a pie bird. This comical character stands about 4” tall, and is hollow with a huge open mouth. He was probably made in Japan, and sold at a dimestore like Newberrys or Woolworths- see the 9 cent price on the bottom? He was hand painted, and there are a few “flea bites” to the glaze, one on the rim of the yellow hat, and a few very tiny ones above the top lip. Also, it looks like sometime in his life, a few paint chips have been repainted - one on the bottom lip, one on the right hand sleeve cuff, and on the bottom end of the coattail. The paint color matches very well, the only reason I could find them was that they are a little rough. He displays very well, I have never used him in his intended purpose in the 20 some years I have had him.
