Up for auction is a well crafted medium-sized vintage Gullah sweetgrass basket, woven in the middle years of the past century. This basket is formed in a round shape, almost a cone shape, with a round body and a coiled backing which has a looped handle for hanging it on a wall. When you visit the market in Charleston, you can still see the ladies selling their baskets of all shapes and sizes. This basket was made of the traditional sweetgrass bound with the traditional palmetto binding. There are also bands of pineneedle accents decorating the outer rim and on the sides - in fact a lot of pine needles were used in this basket's construction, and they make a nice contrast. This would have been intended for use as a basket to hold combs, candles, or other personal items. The basket is old enough that the palmetto wraps have lost their greenish color and have turned almost the same shade as the sweetgrass coils - I would put its age as from the 1960's or 1970's. This is a beautiful Gullah basket which makes a very attractive piece for use or display. The basket, as noted, is a nice medium size for one of these vintage Gullah baskets, measuring 9½" x 7" across at the widest point on the sides, and with a 5½" deep pocket. The basket is in really nice shape for its age, with no missing palmetto wraps, frayed sweetgrass, or any other damage. read more
