Vintage Copper and Brass "Kontrol" Soda-Acid Type Fire Extinguisher DESCRIPTION This is a vintage copper and brass "Kontrol" soda and acid type fire extinguisher made by the Stempel Fire Extinguisher Manufacturing Company of St. Louis, Missouri. The fire extinguisher is 24" high and 7" in diameter and is equipped with a brass carrying handle. The three face plates are brass and identify it as a 2 1/2 gallon hand fire extinguisher tested at 350 pounds of pressure. Other information includes the operating and recharging instructions. The outside copper body is sealed along the back seam with copper rivets. The top unscrews to reveal the acid bottle with metal mushroom stopper held securely in a galvanized metal cage. When the extinguisher was turned bottom up to fight a fire, the metal stopper fell out of the bottle and the acid solution mixed with the 2 1/2 gallons of soda solution. The resulting chemical reaction propelled the mixture out of the attached rubber hose. CONDITION The Kontrol copper and brass fire extinguisher is in excellent condition. The tarnish on both the copper body and the brass plates can be removed by polishing. A company that specializes in professional polishing and cleaning can restore the extinguisher to a brilliant finish, which can be preserved indefinitely with a lacquer coating. The rubber hose
