I have to admit, when I found this small wine ewer at a local antique shop, I was tempted to keep it. In all my years of antiquing, I've never seen one quite like this before. Not only is the size unique--it only measures about 7" tall, and it is 3" at the base--but the silver plate is adorned with grape leaves and vines, and the unusual spout is actually the face of a bearded man. T are no makers' marks, but the styling leads me to believe it's late 19th to early 20th century. Art Nouveau perhaps? The crystal design is also quite lovely, and the glass is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The silver appears to need a good bit of polishing, and just below the spout, w the rim meets the glass, it feels slightly rough, but the defect is invisible to the eye. The few age-related imperfections don't detract from the charm of this decanter at all. My guess is that this was used for individual servings of wine. Feel free to e-mail with questions before bidding. I do my best to describe things as accurately as possible, but I'm happy to provide more info if necessary. Good luck bidding!!
New Note: I've just noticed that t is a small chip to the silver on the inside of the handle. It looks more like age wear--not so noticeable until close inspection--but it is slightly rough to the touch. That's how I noticed it. This piece is not mint, but definitely charming and different! |
