This item is collectiable on several levels.

The dachshund dog is fast becomming collectible to owners and breeders of this resilient ol' dog it is also collectible as a boot scraper as a really old one such as this is getting hard to come by.

And this particular piece of iron is also collectibe as it came from what was formally known as the James Penny Plantation in Zachary, LA. It is also collectible as a western item, as the loop tail of this dachshund is a tie down for horses as these boot scrapers were kept next to watering troths in towns and on ranches.

First I will start with the Civil War connection. This boot scraper came from the James Penny plantation which was used as a holding and welling station for soldiers on the way to Port Hudson for the famous battle of Port Hudson. The welling stations were used to cure the men of illnesses and starvation and severe fatique from many 100's of miles of marching to reach this battle. As it was a pentical point of Civil War history. The battle or seige of Port Hudson can easily be found on the net as t is a vast amount of information on it. The James Penny Plantation was overran with Yankee soliders with many 1000's troop encampments enbedded in the hills of the White Bayous sourounding this property. This welling station was headed up by non other than Nathan P. Banks himself. It is very possible that Nathan P. Banks and the likes of such scraped their boots on this very boot scraper, as no one really knows when the first cast of these old original dachshund were originally cast. T were many copies that came after. But as you can tell by the aged pitting and coloration of the pitina of this cast iron and the casting lag lines this is definatly an original version. The Penny plantation was also visited by Presidents and other dignataries. As James Penny himself fought in the revolutartionary war, and started the plantation in 1799.

This little dog would also be neat to have if you are a Dachshund breeder or owner. It would make an excellent door stop for a study and if heated and seasoned black it would go with any decor.

It is also great for cowboys who wish to use it for its original purpose which would not in anyway harm the value of this little guy as nothing is more resilient than cast.

These cast iron come across ebay fairly often in the newer lighter versions. I have only seen one other of this type "later cast" but it had been painted which is not recommended for these old pieces. So you are not likely to see this old piece come across ebay again for quite some time. This boot scraper weighs right at 23 lbs, and from nose to hind feet is 21 inches, it is 7 1/2 inches at its tallest point, the back feet are 7 inches apart, its front feet are 3 1/4 apart.

I am starting my bid for this great piece for $49.99 with no reserve and honest shipping.
