The closest thing to a Neve in a 500 series format! we tested the great River,Avedis MA5 and this one (the original,not MKII) and ended up keeping this one;unfortunatelly now,it has to go!! Now,again,this is thick,mellow,"Carnhill transformers" Neve sounding preamp,its colored! it sounds "vintage". Its in great condition! The original model had the Carnhill input and output transformers (the same as the early Neves) The new ones have either theyr own (as usual) or they're putting the "Vintagedesign"sticker on top of the transformers,anyway,this one is the one to get!! Some extra info:M581 The M581 is a new version of the much acclaimed M81R preamp that fits into an API 500 rackframe. In order to comply with the API format and power requirements (+/-16v) the M81R needed to be modified in several ways without compromising sound quality. The output transformer were modified to fit snugly into the 1½ space available. Features include both front (XLR Combo) and the standard rear input.
