A little Dunhill history
One of the most prestigious pipe companies in the world today and also one of the most expensive, as this firm makes only "firsts" and removes any "seconds" that they may discover during their 80 different inspections along each step of the pipemaking route. The company was started in 1893 when Alfred Dunhill began making accessories for early motorists of the day. Following the successful introduction of his patented windshield pipe, he opened a "specialists pipe store" in London in 1907. In 1912 he began incorporating the "white spot" to enable workers to quickly tell which end was "up" when the handcarved vulcanite mouthpiece was hand-fitted to the pipe shank. This "white spot" has since become a classic Alfred Dunhill trademark. Today, the London-based company continues to use only Premium Grade AA briar for their bowls and produces pipes that range from classical shapes to special order items that may take a year or more to complete. Alfred Dunhill is presently personified by Richard, grandson of the founder, who continues with Alfred's ideals of perfection. The firm has long had its own line of "My Mixture" tobaccos and cigars. But under "Mr. Richard's" guidance, it has also branched out into jewelry, fragrances, leather goods, and designer clothes, thus expanding the influence of their elegant name to fashions as well as to pipes.
