A CHOSEN ONE Jodie’s mother was preparing to bake one of her famous cheesecakes that her family loved so much. She was opening the refrigerator door, when she thought she heard a faint but strange sound coming from Jodie’s bedroom. She put her thoughts of baking aside for a moment and moved quickly to Jodie’s room, just in case there was something the matter. Jodie lay across her bed, tears streaming down her face. Her body shook inside and out. “What in the world is wrong?” asked her mother as she moved toward Jodie. Jodie wanted to blurt out her troubled thoughts, but no words came. All she could do was to grab her mother around the neck and just hang on. Jodie’s mother allowed her daughter’s sobs to subside before pursuing anymore questions. Finally, Jodie felt calmed within, at least somewhat. She pulled gently away from her mother and sat quietly, attempting to dry her tears with the last of the tissues from her nightstand. “Can you talk to me now, Jodie?” her mother asked with a patient tone. “I think so, mom,” responded Jodie, “at least I can try.” Jodie took in a deep breath and then sighed. Her words strained forth, more like a whisper so that she would not break out in tears again. Then the words came more freely. “I thought I was OK with news that you gave me last week – the news that I was adopted. It was a shock, yet I felt like I understood. But now – I keep having so many confusing thoughts and feelings. I know you love me and I know that I want no other mother and father than you and Dad. But I still feel – sort of – unconnected. And I keep wondering why my first mom and dad didn’t want to keep me. I know these feelings don’t make any sense and I hate myself for not being able to put all the crazy thoughts out of my head.” Her mother put her arm around her and smiled as she also took a deep breath. “Your feelings and thoughts are not crazy. They are very natural and will always be there to some degree, at least in the back of your head. But the older you get and the more wisdom you gain, the less these thoughts and feelings will make you sad or confused.” Then silently she prayed a quick prayer, “Lord, help me to say just the right words.” She then got down on the floor, got into a comfortable position, laid one of her hands on one of Jodie’s, and spoke again, this time with more confidence. “The first thing you must remember is that none of this was your fault. I’m sure that your biological mom and dad gave you up because they love you, not because they didn’t love you. They must have known that they could not give you what you needed at the time. They chose to give you to someone who could give you what they wanted you to have, rather than to bring you up in a situation they felt would have brought you much pain and suffering.” “And as far as your dad and I are concerned, we love you just as much – perhaps more – than if you were our natural child. We want you to feel proud and happy that we didn’t just have you by accident – but that we prayerfully chose you. You need to know that we felt the leading of God and so much love in our hearts for you that we actually picked you to be our daughter.” Jodie interrupted with a sweet smile. “I believe that God wanted me to be a part of this family.
