An outstanding example of the Arts and Crafts period embroidery. This table oval is from, I believe, the 1920's. This is a substantial piece. The measurements for the body of the piece and by that I mean the actual linen surface, taken from the back are; 21" high by 30"wide. The measurements taken from the front are 20 1/2" high by 29 1/4" wide . The overall dimensions, that is including the fringe, are 31" high by 41" wide. This is a vintage textile, and as such, is in very good gently used condition. The actual workmanship is very good, t is actual dimension to the embroidery. The colors are vibrant, the design is bold, the work is crisp. T are no missing areas, no holes or pulls. Having said that, it has not escaped unscathed by time. Two things to note; one is a small stain close to the edge of the piece on the linen, the other is on the cotton trim border. I have photographed these and highlighted them with a red > symbol. The linen center is embroidered with silk thread in various shades of green and golden yellows and outlined in black. The stitches are even and densely executed. The embroidery is raised from the linen ground, it is dimensional. The sheen of the threads adds to this effect. The design which is a stylized floral, perhaps an orchid or iris, with leaves and vines forming the center. The linen is finished with a cotton trim which is hand tied creating a repetitive triangular motif. I have not tried to clean this. I leave this to someone with greater knowledge and experience. A truely fine example of the textile arts. I thank you for looking { and reading !} !
