This is a fantastic bit of vintage engineering but what is it? It looks like a sort of level or theodolite but is extremely heavy, being made from cast iron, steel brass and bronze. It has a scale up the front a scope that is fixed in the horizontal plane but has focus adjustment it has micro adjustments for accurate initial setting. There are adjusters on all three feet and a spirit level to set it perfectly level, because the whole thing rotates on a central column with a bearing at the bottom the spirit level can be used through 360degrees in the horizontal to get it perfectly accurate.the scope can be raised or lowered on the scale by slackening a clamp,it is counterbalanced by a huge bronze weight controlled by two cables that go from scope assembly up over two wheels down to the weight. The scope assembly can then be locked in place and finely adjusted by a lever micro adjuster, there is a clamp lever that clamps on the bottom bearing and locks it in required position. The whole thing is extremely heavy but incredibly well engineered,it is about 4'10" tall, made by 'The Cambridge Instrument Company Ltd' No C 491249.It has the usual knocks associated with a bit of vintage engineering equipment, the spirit level glass is cracked and a small thumbscrew is missing apart from that very good. I would love to know more about this if anyone read more
