Solid pewter heavy gauge lidded tankard. Three dimples in the tankard area that can be pounded out by a good silversmith. Slightly out of round mouth. Backstamped in a double V shaped pattern SHEFFIELD ENGLISH PEWTER MADE IN ENGLAND. Measures 6.25 inches to the thumb hinge X 4 inches in diameter (bottom foot diameter) X 3 inches (top opening diameter). Handle is very generous. A version of this tankard is still being made by Sheffield. Pewter in shiny good shape, metal is sound, just needs some TLC to bring it up to mint, but certainly worth the trouble for a fine piece of pewter.
HISTORY: Pewter is a prized alloy manufactured from tin, with a small amount of copper and antimony added to give it strength. Considered the world's fourth most precious metal after platinum, gold and silver, its ability to withstand time and its shiny brilliance gives it great value, particularly so when shaped into plates, goblets, figurines, etc. Unlike silver, pewter does not require polishing or any other special care. It does not rust, tarnish or deteriorate in any way over time. It is very hard to find very, very old American pewter. Much of it was melted and reformed into musket balls to be used during the American Revolutionary War. Item offered Ã,Â"AS ISÃ,Â". The best Ã,Â"in good faithÃ,Â" descriptions and pictures are given, along with history, (if possible and if known) based on comparables and research available at the time of listing.
