Vintage European Gypsy Vardo Wagon Model w/ Pyrography Detailed artwork, authentic working model, signed, !! This listing is for a wonderful treasure that I recently purchased at an English container shipment sale - a wooden working model of a gypsy wagon, or vardo, that is just fantastic, and quite a collector's item for anyone that appreciates English Romanian Gypsy folklore, OR woodworking, specifically pyrography or pokerwork ("wood burning"), OR collectors of model horses and carriages/wagons...........I am quite challenged in just deciding which eBay categories to list it in!!! The domed top vardo has walls that slope outward toward the eaves, in true vardo fashion. It has curved side edges and cute red fringe on the front and back arched eaves. T are two arched door openings on the front and back, each with beige fabric rope trim around the exterior edge and the back door with multi-colored fringe in the opening as well. Each side of the wagon has a window with beige fringe on the interior, and a single window pane that appears to be made of a clear plastic-type material(not glass). A little metal "smokestack" is on the left side of the roof. Now, for the pyrography or "pokerwork" wood burning details .......on the front, over the small arched opening is a wood burned image of a horse head inside a fancy woodburned circular shape "frame". On both sides, t are six small panels, each with a fancy daisy-type floral design and four larger panels with an ivy-type floral design. The back of the wagon has a scene of a tree and mountains and a sunset around the arched back door. Additionally, t are other little designs all over the sides, front, back and wagon tongue. It is signed " M R Stimson" on the underneath side of the wagon tongue. The wagon is constructed of a light wood, perhaps beech or birch or sycamore, I really do not know for sure, this is not the typical English oak or walnut or mahogany furniture that I normally deal with. The domed roof is made from long flat slats and the sides have raised wood panel effects. The wood wheels have tiny wood spokes and metal bans on the outside. They all roll smoothly and freely. The front wheels turn and change direction (left and right) on their axle, based upon which way you turn the wagon tongue, just like a real horse drawn wagon. The size would allow for one horse of the proper scale to be added to the wagon. The back of the wagon has a wooden "step" that swings from left to right on thin metal. The single horse "shaft" is connected to the wagon by a small brass hook/eye on each side, and each side of the shaft has a small metal bracket on the end, for whatever the appropriate horse tackle would be. The wagon measurements: 12" height; 8" width at roof edges, 5 ¾" width at wheelbase; 22 ¾" maximum length; 13" length of wagon rear to wagon front (excluding horse shaft). The wagon is in very good condition for it's age, visually appealing and structurally sound with normal signs of age and use, scratches, dings, and other imperfections.
