The Explorer line was Gutmann Cutlery's premium line. Gutmann also owned the Edge Brand and Edge Mark names among others. The Explorer line knives were made in germany in the earlier years and were knives of exceptional quality. These knives were made by several different Solingen, Germany based firms. Several of the Explorer knives bear a very strong resemblence to Puma knives and for years I had thought that the same folks who made Puma's knives may have made the some of the Explorers as well. I now am not so sure about this, although I do still believe that many of their blades and components came from a common source. The blade for this knife was very likely made by Carl Hartkopf who drop-forged bowie-style blades for many Solingen companies. This appears to be a later Explorer and was likely made not too long before Gutmann began contracting their knives to Japanese makers instead of German makers. This piece is of excellent quality and is an outstanding example of the premium quality this line represented before the Asian move. As near as I've been able to determine, this line was only made in Germany for a couple years before the shift to Japan took place. If anyone knows exact dates, I'd love to know too.
